From pink raspberry gin to mouth-watering rhubarb or sweet violet or even salted caramel ... you will get to taste all types of flavoured gins during this very special tasting. You will also understand the use of refreshing mixers instead of Indian Tonic Waters, from Fever Tree Elderflower, Sicilian Lemonade to even Mediterranean Tonic and Fentimans Ginger Ale, as well as yummy and colourful garnishes, to create THE perfect long drink for your palate!
While gin is, by definition, flavoured, there has been a rise in lower-strength, sweet, Gin-based Liqueurs too, and we shall taste two during this tasting, of course.
Gin liqueurs are in a category of their own. They’re absolutely gorgeous added to prosecco, incredibly versatile in cocktails and even easy drinking on the rocks. If you’re reading this, you may already know and love them, but first off: what is gin liqueur? Liqueurs are flavoured, sweetened gins that are created at a lower alcohol strength — around 20% abv rather than the minimum 37.5% abv for gin. One of the beautiful things about liqueurs is that you can go as budget or premium as you like. Whether you’re in the market for a great drink for £12 or £40, you’re guaranteed to find something delicious.
However, we shall concentrate on Premium Gins, although infused ones with natural botanicals. Popular flavours include fruits (sloe, damson, orange, rhubarb), floral (violet, rose, elderflower), or spices such as ginger.
Pinkster is a good example, as it is a raspberry-infused gin. G&J, one of the country’s oldest distillers, was recruited to produce the core spirit with five botanicals to an original recipe ans thus make a Premium Gin, distilled in small batches. However, a further three botanicals, including fresh, plump raspberries grown nearby their rural base outside Cambridge were then macerated to extract flavour and colour ... which makes it a flavoured gin!
Like blackberries? Then let me introduce you to Chilgrove Bramble in West Sussex instead. They combine 100% grape-alcohol with crystal-clear Sussex natural mineral water, from South Downs Water, along with twelve carefully balanced botanicals including blackberry. The resulting London Dry Gin is then infused with stunning whole English blackberries for a full lunar cycle to fully capture the essence of this Gloriously English fruit. The result is a seriously-smooth, ruby-red gin just bursting with fruit. Introducing blackberries carefully in these two separate parts of the gin-making process ensures that juniper remains at the forefront which, coupled with a bottling-strength of 42% abv, truly earns its title of ‘Super-Premium Gin’.
